An air-to-ground missile destroyed a house in Ansar, to the east of Sidon, killing six people. Half-an-hour later, as rescue teams searched through the rubble, the warplanes returned to attack the town again.

08-06-06 - Half of U.S. still believes Iraq had WMD experts see a raft of reasons why: a drumbeat of voices from talk radio to die-hard bloggers to the Oval Office, a surprise headline here or there, a rallying around a partisan flag, and a growing need for people, in their own minds, to justify the war in Iraq.
Now who would want Americans to still believe that Iraq had WMDs, mewonders?

08-06-06 - 9/11 conspiracy theorists thriving

08-06-06 - CNN RELIABLE SOURCES I think civilian casualties are also part of the battlefield play for both sides here. One of the things that is going on, according to some U.S. military analysts, is that Israel purposely has left pockets of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon, because as long as they're being rocketed, they can continue to have a sort of moral equivalency in their operations in Lebanon. KURTZ: Hold on, you're suggesting that Israel has deliberately allowed Hezbollah to retain some of it's fire power, essentially for PR purposes, because having Israeli civilians killed helps them in the public relations war here?
RICKS: Yes, that's what military analysts have told me. Maybe that's why the Israeli Arabs, who have been taking the brunt of the Hezbollah rockets of late, have been left to fend for themselves in Israel, while other Israelis go to the West Bank settlements. I wonder if any West Bank settlements, all of which are Jewish, have taken in any Israeli Arabs.

08-06-06 - Syria rejects Mideast cease-fire plan Syria's foreign minister declared Sunday that a U.S.-French cease-fire plan was "a recipe for the continuation of the war," between Israeli and Hezbollah, which he said the Jewish state cannot win.

08-06-06 - Beirut fishermen devastated by Israeli port attack The pair are originally Palestinian. The father fled Gaza in 1948 to find refuge in Lebanon. But now everything they owned in Lebanon, a home overlooking the port and two fishing boats, has been destroyed by the Israeli raids.

08-06-06 - Rice: Iraq isn't becoming another Iran Hagel said this country cannot "ask them to do the things that we're asking them to do in the middle of a civil war, and that's where it's headed." "We're ruining our United States Army. We are decimating our army. We can't continue with the tempo and the commitment that we are on right now," Hagel said on CBS "Face the Nation."
I would imagine that Hagel's realism and candor will earn him the animosity of Cheney and the neocons.

08-06-06 - Robert Fisk: This draft shows who is running America's policy... Israel A close analysis of the American-French draft - the fingerprints of John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, were almost smudging the paragraphs - showed just who is running Washington's Middle East policy: Israel.

But when Israeli missiles struck a convoy of Lebanese villagers fleeing the southern village of Merwaheen on the third day of the war, killing at least 15 people and blowing children into nearby ravines, the 38-year-old mother was galvanized.

08-06-06 - 'Moment of opportunity': yes, but only if the US asks Israel the hard questions Who knows what new Hizbullah is rising from the dust, amid the survivors at Qana? ...All Israel and the US have gained from this brutal pounding, and the deaths of hundreds of innocents, is increasing enmity and further isolation from the Arab world. Indeed, in their tacit and lonely support for Israel's bombing of Lebanese ambulances, homes, roads, airports, and state infrastructure, US officials have done the Jewish state no favors.

08-06-06 - Bush Backing Israel Despite Divisions "The crisis in the Middle East today has brought us to one of those rare moments that transcend party and ideological lines. There is no daylight at all between the government of Israel, the Bush administration, Congress and the American Jewish community," said William Daroff, director of the Washington office of United Jewish Communities, the national roof body of local Jewish charitable federations. That's a "rare moment"? Hardly. It is official Congressional and White House policy to pander to Israel.

08-06-06 - A tale of two failed Mideast states Failed states in general, and particularly those in the Middle East, represent potential threats to the US because they could be transformed into terrorist bases. First of all, the photo, even doctored, doesn't really add anything to the scene or make it appear any worse. So, it is unclear how this is some kind of conspiracy. Secondly, this will now be wielded as 'evidence' that all photos of Lebanon's devastation are doctored, no doubt. Since one photo was doctored, then all photos that damage Israel must be doctored too; the 'logic' of the Israel-defender. One remedy: look for similar photos of the same scene that were taken by different press agencies.
